Podcasting has become an increasingly popular medium for sharing information, opinions, and stories.
I’ve launched many podcasts, and I’ve learned that starting a podcast requires more than just a microphone and a topic. It requires planning, strategy, commitment, and consistency.
So here are 6 things I’d tell myself before starting my first podcast:
- The Importance of Planning
Before recording your first episode, it’s important to plan out the structure and format, and create topic maps. Having a plan will help you stay organized and focused, which will make sure that you don’t waste listeners’ time. Take the time to plan out each episode, including the key points you want to cover and the guests you want to invite.
- The Time Commitment
Running a successful podcast requires time and effort. You must dedicate time to researching, writing, recording, editing, and promoting each episode.
Be realistic about the time you have and the level of effort required to produce the show.
You may need to adjust your schedule to accommodate the demands of producing a podcast.
- Interviewing ain’t Easy
If your podcast involves interviewing guests, it’s important to learn how to ask compelling questions without wasting too much time. Running a conversation is hard and takes time to get better.
Be kind to yourself and spend time learning tips for better interviewing.
Preparing for interviews by doing research on your guests beforehand to help you ask more insightful questions.
- Technical Elements
Investing in recording equipment and recording/editing software is essential for producing a high-quality podcast. It doesn’t have to be expensive, but it has to be right for your recording conditions. Learning how to edit and mix your audio and understanding how to upload your episodes to hosting platforms can also be tedious.
Make sure to choose a quiet recording space and use a good quality microphone so that your audio is clear and easy to understand.

Recording over zoom with no external mic is not an option!
- The Importance of Consistency
Consistency is key when it comes to podcasting. Create a regular release schedule and a consistent format and structure for each episode.
It doesn’t have to be released each week, but it does have to be consistent.
This will help your listeners know what to expect and when to expect it, which will keep them engaged and coming back for more.
- The Value of Promotion
Promoting your podcast goes beyond a post on LinkedIn or Facebook saying, “great talk today with X; check it out and listen here.”
You need to invest time and effort into social media, email marketing, and other channels to attract new listeners and grow your audience.
Consider collaborating with other podcasters in your niche and creating a website for your show.
Having a podcast for your business or personal brand is super important, and by knowing and implementing these 6 things, you will be set up for long-term success!
